The purpose of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) is "...to protect the best interest of Indian Children and to promote the stability and security of Indian tribes and families by the establishment of minimum Federal standards for the removal of Indian children and placement of such children in homes which will reflect the unique values of Indian culture... "(25 U.S. C. 1902). ICWA provides guidance to States regarding the handling of child abuse and neglect and adoption cases involving Native children and sets minimum standards for the handling of these cases.

As an umbrella organization, AICC supports the activities of the Indian Child Welfare Act, ICWA Task Force of Los Angeles by annually providing donated equipment, toys and necessity items at Christmas as well as books, school supplies and necessity items as needed/school supplies/backpacks are needed/collected. We provide an annual Financial Education Services class with a cultural perspective to enhance our youth's financial knowledge in real life. The ICWA Task Force supports the urban Native children and families in Southern California who are eligible under ICWA's mandate and will assist where possible in cases when the mandate is not being applied appropriately.
Since 2014, AICC has partnered with Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS) as well as Child Protective Services (CPS), United American Indian Involvement, and the Native American Caucus of the Service Employees International Union’s District 721 on the ICWA Christmas Toy & Gift Drive, which fulfills Christmas wishes for Native children in foster care.
This holiday season, we fulfilled Christmas wishes for over 100 Native foster youth across Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Thanks to our community’s support, these children experienced the joy, dignity, and care every child deserves during the holidays. We still need your help.
Unfortunately, our drive year fell short of covering the cost of the toys and gifts, leaving a $3,000 funding gap. Your gift today will help us close that gap and ensure this vital program continues next year for Native foster youth who need it most.
All donations are tax-deductible.
